As an European, one of the most curious things I’ve seen in USA is people with opposite points of view expressing it publicly on the streets, next to each other. Especially about homosexual issues.

I’m pretty sure that would end with a fist fight in Spain…

Today the Director announces that when the XHTML 2 Working Group charter expires as scheduled at the end of 2009, the charter will not be renewed. By doing so, and by increasing resources in the Working Group, W3C hopes to accelerate the progress of HTML 5 and clarify W3C’s position regarding the future of HTML.

Archive of W3C News in 2009

I’m not happy about that (XHTML 2 should have been the language of the next generation of webpages) but it was nonsense maintaining two working groups with similar goals.

It is remarkable that the most powerful company on the Web would feel threatened by one that has yet to turn a profit. (Last year, one insider estimates, Facebook burned through $75 million plus the $275 million in revenue it brought in; Google made $4.2 billion on an astounding $15.8 billion in net revenue.)

Great Wall of Facebook: The Social Network’s Plan to Dominate the Internet

I think Facebook will find a way to be profitable soon but, until then, it’s pretty astonishing to compare both companies’ numbers.

One appears to be female; the other, male. Both faces actually belong to the same person, digitally altered by Richard Russell of Harvard University. The dark parts of the photograph are a little darker and light parts are a little lighter in the “female” photograph. The subtle changes suggest that one way our brains may sort out sex is to notice how strong the contrast is between features.

Steve Jobs has got a hierarchy of judgment that’s really pretty simple: at the top is ‘Insanely great,’ which is the best in category that you’ll see in your lifetime. Then there’s ‘really, really, really great,’ - and he says it packed with emotion - that’s the best that you’ll see this year or maybe this decade.. And, there’s ‘shit,’ and that’s the entire hierarchy. […] Steve has a vision of what great is, and he’s never going to settle for anybody else’s standard of great.

The illustration was made by Patrick Moberg. Remember him?
